Homeschooling, Intentional Parenting… and Raising Little Leaders Along the Way

Updated: May 18
A number of years ago, we found ourselves stepping into homeschooling… completely by accident.
It wasn’t something we had carefully planned or mapped out.
At the time, our eldest had just started Pre-Primary at a private school. Being a May baby, she was one of the youngest in her class — still only four when the school year began. She was bright, curious, and already spelling her name… but emotionally, she was still so little.
A few weeks into the school year, something didn’t feel right.
Every Tuesday morning before school, she would get sick.
After a few weeks of this, I went into the school and asked what was happening first thing on a Tuesday… and that’s when I found out she had been struggling in her Italian class. She was being called on in front of a large group and, although she knew the answers, she would freeze.
And as a mum… something in me just knew this wasn’t right for her.
When we got home that day, she said something I’ll never forget:
“Mum, you taught me to spell my name before I started school… why can’t you teach me again?”
And just like that… everything shifted.

The Unexpected Beginning
Sometimes the most meaningful paths aren’t planned…
From the day we stepped into home educating our children, we’ve never looked back. There were moments of doubt — times we wondered if we were truly up for the task — but we kept going.
What started as a response to one moment became a completely different path for our family.
Because this was about so much more than education.
Yes, we were choosing a different way to learn…
But deeper than that, we were choosing a different way to live.
A slower rhythm.
A more intentional way of being together.
A chance to shape not just what our children know…
but who they’re becoming.
And I think that’s where homeschooling and intentional parenting beautifully meet.
What began unexpectedly…slowly became something deeply intentional.
It was never just about the curriculum
One of the things I’ve come to appreciate most over the years is this:
👉 Homeschooling gives you the space to really see your child.
To notice:
how they learn
what excites them
where they struggle
what lights them up
And instead of trying to fit them into a system… you gently build something around them.
Not perfectly. Not always smoothly. But intentionally.
The unexpected gifts along the way
Looking back, there were so many beautiful benefits we didn’t fully anticipate at the beginning… not just academically, but in life.
Things like:
learning that flowed with their natural interests
the flexibility to adjust our days when life happened
deeper family connection (because you’re really doing life together)
the ability to weave your values into everyday moments
Not in a forced way… but in the quiet, consistent rhythm of daily life.
Creating a rhythm that works for your family
One thing I learnt fairly quickly…
You don’t need a perfectly structured school day. But you do need a gentle rhythm.
Something that gives your day shape… without pressure.
That might look like:
a consistent start time (even if it’s a relaxed one ☕)
pockets of focused learning
breaks to reset
time outside
space for creativity
And some days?
It won’t go to plan at all.
And that’s okay too.
Learning doesn’t have to stay at the table
Some of our best learning moments didn’t happen sitting down with books.
They happened:
in the kitchen
on the trampoline
out in the garden
on little adventures
during conversations
Hands-on learning became such a natural part of our days.
(Which probably explains why Yum Science feels like such a full-circle moment now 😄)
Raising thinkers, not just learners
Something I became really passionate about over time was this:
Teaching our kids how to think, not just what to learn.
That looked like:
asking open-ended questions
letting them wonder out loud
giving them space to problem-solve
allowing them to explore ideas (even messy ones)
Because confidence doesn’t come from always getting things right…
It comes from being willing to try, think, and grow.
Where leadership quietly begins
Leadership doesn’t start in adulthood.
It starts here… in the small, everyday moments.
When children are given the space to:
make choices
take ownership
set simple goals
try things for themselves
You start to see something shift.
Confidence builds. Responsibility grows...
And they begin to trust themselves.
Intentional parenting (in the middle of real life)
This is the part I hold closest to my heart.
Because homeschooling isn’t just about what we teach…It’s about how we show up.
In the everyday:
how we respond when things feel frustrating
how we model learning and growth
how we talk through emotions
how we navigate challenges together
Our children are always watching…
Not for perfection…
but for consistency and authenticity.
Don’t forget the life skills
Some of the most valuable lessons don’t come from books at all.
They come from life.
Things like:
cooking together
learning how to manage money
helping around the home
starting little projects or ideas
These moments quietly build confidence and independence…
And they stay with them long after the school years.
You’re not meant to do this alone
There were definitely seasons where homeschooling felt a little isolating.
And that’s when connection became so important.
Finding:
other home-school families
co-ops or small groups
shared experiences and encouragement
Because sometimes you just need someone to say…
👉 “You’re doing better than you think you are.”
A gentle reminder as you go
If you’re on this journey… or even just considering it…
Can I say this gently?
👉 You don’t have to do it perfectly.
There will be days that feel beautiful and aligned…
And days that feel messy and uncertain.
Both are part of it.
Final thoughts
If I could sum it all up simply, it would be this:
Homeschooling isn’t just about raising educated children…
it’s about raising thoughtful, capable, grounded humans.
And that happens:
in the conversations
in the everyday moments
in the way we choose to lead with intention
So maybe today…
Just take a moment to notice what’s already happening in your home.
The learning.
The growth.
The connection.
There’s purpose in all of it 🌿
A little thought to carry with you
You don’t need a perfect plan to be an intentional parent.
Sometimes…
🌸 showing up
🌸 staying present
🌸 choosing connection
…is more than enough.
